Walmart Canada and Breakfast Clubs of Canada set the wheels in motion to raise funds and awareness for school breakfast programs
Toronto, February 9, 2010 - Walmart Canada and Breakfast Clubs of Canada invite Canadians to take part in the third annual Taste for Learning campaign, an exciting and unique event that will raise money and awareness for more than 2,000 school breakfast programs across the country supported by Breakfast Clubs of Canada.
When children go to school hungry or poorly nourished, their energy levels, memory, problem-solving skills, creativity, concentration and behaviour are all negatively impacted. As a result of being hungry at school, these children may not reach their full developmental potential—an outcome that can have a health impact throughout their entire lives. School breakfast programs help to level the playing field for these children.
The truck stops here
The Taste for Learning tour will kick off on February 9, 2010. Until February 19, a specially-designed 53-foot-long truck will head west making stops in six major cities: Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and Kelowna, to promote the in-store fundraising campaign at Walmart Canada stores on February 18.
At each stop, the public is invited to drop by a predetermined location to receive one of the 2,000 breakfast bags filled with Breakfast Clubs of Canada partner products. They will also have the opportunity to meet Astral Media radio morning show hosts and the chance to win prizes.
Astral Media radio listeners can hear more about the campaign and Breakfast Clubs of Canada by tuning in to their favourite Astral radio station.
Give your change to make a change
From February 18 to March 18, 2010, the public is invited to show their generosity at Walmart Canada stores. For only $1, customers can buy a Breakfast Clubs of Canada bookmark to support a coast-to-coast network of school breakfast programs. Inspired by the record-breaking customer response to last year’s campaign, this year’s fundraising goal is $2.3 million.
Daniel Germain, President-Founder of Breakfast Clubs of Canada, is thrilled to be able to count on, once again, the enthusiasm and participation of Walmart and its associates. “I often say that each of us is capable of doing our part, but together, we can truly change the world. Walmart’s Taste for Learning campaign is a fantastic example of this. On its own, spending $1 on a bookmark might seem insignificant. But when we put these millions of small gestures together, it’s clear that there is definitely strength in numbers.”
“Since 2005, Walmart Canada has been helping to nourish young minds through Breakfast Clubs of Canada because we believe all Canadian children should be given the opportunity to start their day at school with the energy they need to learn,” said David Cheesewright, president and CEO of Walmart Canada. “Our customers and associates hold this cause close to their hearts and we count on their enthusiasm and support for the continued success of this campaign.”
Customers can also support the Taste for Learning fundraising campaign by buying select food products from Saputo, Danone, Kellogg’s and Minute Maid in Walmart stores across Canada. These generous partners will donate a portion of sales during the campaign to Breakfast Clubs of Canada.
